Pitching for the Diamond Dogs

Player health always comes first. No game, tournament or ring is worth risking a young athlete’s long-term future.

We work with the MLB’s Pitch Smart guidelines to ensure safe, sustainable development. We never overuse pitchers—no exceptions.

But it doesn’t stop at safety. Our program is rooted in fundamentals-first development, teaching young pitchers how to move efficiently, generate power safely, and build command through proper mechanics—not overuse.

We focus on helping players develop proper mechanics that utilize the entire body to maximize performance while reducing strain on the arm—creating a strong foundation that supports both effectiveness and long-term health.

Lee Zerrusen

Lee Zerrusen is the Diamond Dogs organization’s pitching coach and a former University of Illinois pitcher. He made 57 appearances for the Illini and was part of the 2011 Big Ten championship team. Lee has spent the past five years as a Diamond Dogs head coach, and his team’s consistent success earned a promotion to AAA-level competition.

He believes in developing an entire team of pitchers who can contribute in any game, rather than relying on a single ace. Now, as the Diamond Dogs pitching coach, Coach Lee brings modern knowledge and collegiate experience to the entire program and coaching staff, helping players grow and succeed on the mound.

Arm Care Program

High School Teams

The Diamond Dogs arm care program is designed to develop shoulder and elbow strength and stability, promote proper recovery and mobility, reduce the risk of overuse injuries, and support improvements in both velocity and command.

Pitching

For 8U players, simply "playing catch" is one of the most valuable tools for future pitching success. It helps young athletes develop proper throwing mechanics, build arm strength gradually and improve coordination and timing. Playing catch also lays the foundation for learning how to control the baseball—teaching kids how to aim, adjust velocity, and use their body efficiently. Most importantly, it instills consistency and rhythm, both of which are essential for future pitching development.

Pitch Count

Smart Pitch

At Diamond Dogs, we encourage the MLB’s Pitch Smart guidelines to ensure the long-term health and development of our players. These age-specific recommendations help us manage pitch counts, rest days, and workload to protect arms from overuse injuries. By adhering to these nationally recognized standards, we prioritize safety, promote smart training habits, and support our athletes’ ability to grow and compete at higher levels for years to come.
